Obsidian is volcanic glass that is created when lava cools so quickly that a crystalline structure cannot form. It is very rich in silica and low in water. Black obsidian is the most common color, however, obsidian can occur in greens, browns, oranges and blues.

Because of its ability to fracture into pieces with curved edges, early people dating back to the Stone Age used obsidian to make tools like knives, arrowheads and scrapers. The Aztecs and ancient Greeks were known to utilize this mineraloid as mirrors.
